Commuting to NYC from Hawthorne, NJ

Commuting to the city can seem daunting for some people, but I actually enjoy it. Nothing can keep me away from the city! Now that I live in Hawthorne, it takes me a little bit longer than it used to, but it’s still very simple.

Luckily, Hawthorne has a train station with free commuter parking. The parking lot only has 18 spots, so you will need to purchase a resident parking permit in order to park on the street as the lot fills up pretty quickly. As a resident, it’ll cost you $2 per year. You heard that right. If you’re not a resident, you can still purchase a non-resident parking permit for $700 per year. These permits will allow you to park on the streets near the station. Once you have that settled, you will be ready to commute to the concrete jungle.

Here is how you can get to NYC from Hawthorne using the NJ Transit Train.

Option #1
Take the train to Hoboken and from there, you can transfer to one of two Path trains (World Trade Center or 33rd Street) depending on where you need to go. The WTC Path will take you to the WTC Path station right inside the Oculus, stopping at Newport and Exchange Place (Jersey City) along the way. The 33rd St. Path will take you to the 33rd St. Path station (6th Avenue), stopping at Christopher St., 9th St., 14th St. and 23rd St. along the way. This will take you about 1 hour and cost you $10.25. A one way ticket from Hawthorne to Hoboken is $7.50 and a one way ride on the Path is $2.75.

Option #2
Take the train to Secaucus Junction and from there, you can transfer to another NJ Transit train going to NY Penn Station (34th St. & 8th Ave). This will take you about 50 minutes and cost you $8.50.

Once you’ve done it a few times, it becomes so easy. I personally love using this time to read a book, listen to a podcast, or work on my blog! :)
